MR TANNER'S CANDIDATURE.
w [to thh editob.] S lßj —ln your issue of Saturday, I notico a most amusing letter, signed "Settler." Your correspondent is pleased to say, "if there is one'man more than another that has a claim upon the electors it is Mr Tanner," and that Mr Tanner is unquestionably entitled to the position. lam somewhat curious to see the promised information in a future issue. Does "Settler" mean to say that Mr Tanner has bought the seat and paid for it? No one doubts Mr Tanner's extreme liberality, especially when elections are about. Is that the claim referred to? Mr Tanner has until the last few days expressed his intention of meeting and defeating Mr Smith. He has apparently handed that duty over to another.; Surely a liberal expenditure in a district,' does not give a " claim to a seat in Parliament. It may be lam on the wrong scent, but I cannot help thinking the word should be spelt iv capitals. Patience is a virtue, but in these stirring times of electoral strif o lam anxious to see the further explanation of this pecr'iar claim.—l am, &c, Settler No. 2. June 20, 1887.
