HAMPDEN.
[OWN COEEESPONDEOT.]
Our Road Board is still to the front in making improvements to our roads. Tenders were opened the other day for a metalling contract on the Gwavas-Waipawa-road a 8 follows.—T. Wheeler, £1 6s : 6d per chain (accepted); W. Austin, £1 9s; W. Parkinson, £1 9s. The Domain Board are improving as well. They have ordered fifty macrocarpa trees for the plantation on the Domain. They have sown a quantity of grass-seed as well where the recent fires were. ,Mr J. J. Buchanan of this village, has presented a medal to each of the children attending the school. The School Commits tee held a meeting last week re the invitat" tion of the children to the Napier jubilee sports. They regret being unable to send them, as it would incur too much expense, Hampden being too far from any railway station. Tho entertainment that was got up in aid of the cemetery, to take place on Friday, the 17th of June, has been postponed till Friday next, June 24th. A splendid programme has been arranged, among the perfarmers being Mr Lockhead, the famous step-dancer of Waipawa county,'soagood house is expected. The admission fee is very low—to concert Is, children 6d; to dance 2s; refreshments free. It is to be hoped the weather will he fine for it. We have been getting very heavy rains the last fortnight,' and all the risers and creeks aro in flood. I suppose it is making up for tho dry summer we had. ;
