It is rumored in Wellington that Ministers will resign if they cannot carry the Representation Bill in tho way they introduced it. It would be tho reverse of a calamity if Ministers resigned, but there is not the slightest probability of such an occurrence. They are far too fond of office, and patronage, special trains, reserved carriages, travelling allowances, private secretaries, Ministerial residences, and £1250 a year for them to resign. Through good and evil report, and in stripes often, they have stuck liko limpets to a rook, or a baby to its bottle to the sweets of pay and power. They are not proud. Humility under public scorn, and Parliamentary disapprobation, is their one virtue. Though the Premier used to boast of his opposition to Christianity he offers a remarkable example of the depth to which Christian principles have sunk into the heart of man. In a political sensehehasbeensmitten on both cheeks, and with all the submission of the early martyrs he will turn his back for the application of the boot, but he will not resign office.
