[special to daily telegraph.]

[own correspondent.—by telegraph.]

Auckland, Last night, Enlargement of Auckland Star.

The Auckland Star appears to-night permanently enlarged to eight pages, and printed on a " Weh" machine. In addition there is a four-page pictoral supplement tonight, containing illustrations-af the exterior and interior of the printing works, with descriptive letter-press. An Interesting - Discovery. Capt. McCloud, who owns several islands in the New Hebrides group, and who has been resident there for a numbor of years, has discovered upon a white sandy beach of the Island of Mallicollo (about long. 168, E., lat. 15, S.), amongst some rabbit-workings, a few silver coins. Searching for more, he discovered a considerable number, and from the signs around he decided tho neighboring sea was either yielding up the treasure of a Spanish or Portuguese vessel, wrecked near by, or that tho treasure had been hidden upon the beach. Not having appliances at hand, he left the island for Sydney, where he has obtained proper diving and other apparatus to be used in the interesting search. The well-known " Vagabond" (Mr Julian Thomas, of the Melbourne Argus), accompanies Captain McCloud back to the _and__MrJ_cClaud_lc.ft_ Auckland on Tuesday last, having shown some of the coins to his friends here. Depravity of Young: Girls. A sad instance of tho depravity of some young girls of this city was-tshibited at the Police Court this morning,, when three young girls, whose ages ranged from fourteen to sixteen years, appeared in tho dock to answer to a charge of having no visible lawful means of support. Their names were Rose Jones, Mary Kenhan, and Elizabeth Johnstone. The mother of tho girl Kennan was in Court, and as soon as her girl appeared she rushed out of the Court, ciying bitterly. Kennan hung her head, but the other two began laughing. Each pleaded not guilty to the charge. Detective Herbert deposed to arresting the girls about 11 o'clock last night. They were coming down Chancery-lane, having just left a brothel. The leader of the three, Rose Jones, was drunk and using very bad language. Her father had earnestly requested the police to arrest her upon the first opportunity. All three consorted with prostitutes and led a dissolute life. Mrs Kennan said that her daughter had a good home, but she would not stay there. She had got her a situation, but Rose Jones and others came and took her away from it. The Bench asked the girl Kennan if she would stay at home if discharged. She refused to reply, although the question was several times repeated. Her mother then remarked, " Your AVorship ; she has evidently chosen her bed, and will havo to lie uvjon it." The girl Johnstono also refused to say whether she would go home if discharged. The Bench sentenced Rose Jones to one month's imprisonment, and discharged tho other two, remarking they did not care to send such young girls to gaol. This day. Gold-mining-. Since Christmas two gold-diggers, working on private ground in the Coromandel district, have got £1000 worth of precious metal, and O'Neill's party, working in another part of the district, have divided £1500 since the same time. The latter wero working an abandoned mine. A New Yacht. Mi- Logan, the boat-builder, has got an order to build a 25-ton yacht, to compete at the next intercolonial j'acht race at Sydney. It will cost £1500.
