LATE CABLES.

[press association specials.—corYßiani.]

London, March 18

The Colonial Office has had under consideration a report presented by Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor of Cape Colony, who was sent to Mauritius as a special commissioner to enquire into the dissensions between Sir Pope Hennessy, Governor, and Sir Clifford Lloyd, Lieut-Governor of that island. The decision arrived at is that Sir Pope Hennessy's suspension must be confirmed ; as in view of the irritated state of public feeling of Mauritius, and the improbability of his resumption of the Governorship being acceptable to the inhabitants, it is better for him not to return to the colony. In his speech at the dinner of the Liberal Club. Mr Gladstone dealt especially with the division of the Liberal party on the Irish question. He said in the unsettled state of affairs any important legislation in the interests of Ireland was impossible. The demand for local government was quite reasonable. Mr Clark, Solicitor-General, speaking at another meeting, said the proposals of the Government were adequate to meet the necessities of Ireland. Mr Sandf ord, British Commissioner to the Adelaide Exhibition, leaves for Australia by the Austral on April 28.
