NAPIER SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Napier School Committee was held last evening. There were present Messrs T. Sidey (chirman) J. Parker, S. Glen, J, M'Ancny, S. T. Freeman, and T. W. Bear,
A complaint was received from Mr F. West, as to excessive punishment administered by Mr M'Callum, the third master, to his son—The Chairman reported that on receipt of the complaint he, in company with Mr Fowler, had made a searching enquiry, and found that the complaint wall sustained. Mr West had since interviewed the secretary to the Committee, and requested the withdrawal of the complaint, as Mr M'Callum had made an apology The Conunittee decided to note tho "complaint and result of enquiry in the minutes but to let the matter drop. The election of members for the Board was then proceeded with.—Mr Freeman moved, and Mr Parker seconded, the Rev D. Sidey as a member of the Board —The Chairman moved, and Mr Parker seconded, Mr Gr. H. Swan.—Mr Bear moved, and Mr Gleu seconded, Mr Hornsby.—The Chairman moved, and Mr Freeman seconded Mr R. Harding.—ft was decided to take' the voting by ballot, which resulted in unanimous for thp Rey. p. S,idey and Mr tjr. i±. Swan, and equal votes "for Mr Harding and Mr Hornsby. A lengthy discussion ensued as to the position the Committee stood in with regard to the teaching staff and Committee's allowances in respect to the side school 111 the White-road.—lt was ultimately definitely decided to recommend to the Board that the side school be regarded as a distinct school with a teaching staff of its own, excepting that the Committee reserved to itself the right to request the head master of the main school to supervise and examine the side school should they desire it.-' ; It was also resolved, on the Parker, seconded by Mr McAneny, thkt tlie Board be requested to fence in and improve . the playground of the side school before handing it over to the Committee.
A vote of thanks to Mr R. Williams for gratuitously auditing the Committee's accounts was passed. A number of requisites were authorised, and Qpher routine business transacted.
