SECOND EDITION.

"With this evening's issue is published a supplementary list of contributors to the Hospital fund. Wo would here state that it is absolutely necessary for the names of intending candidates for the . Board of Trustees, the election of whom takes place on Thursday next, to be in the hands of the secretary by noon to-morrow.

Our Hastings correspondent writes:— " The Fisk Jubilee Singers, gave one of their popiilar concerts at Hastings last evening to a crowded house. Long before the advertised time of starting a large crowd had assembled outside, and as soon as the doors were opened there was a scramble for seats, and very soon the hall was filled, every seat being occupied, but still the people kept pouring in, and other forms and chairs had to bo obtained until every available space was occupied, and there was hardly standing room left, so popular had the Jubilee Singers become by repute that all wished to hear them, and all who did hear them went away thoroughly satisfied, and expressed themselves as glad they did not miss the treat. Their performance has so often of lato been described in your paper that it is unnecessary for mo to say more than that they delighted all who heard them, and had they stayed for another night they would have had again a good house. Last night has shown two things— firstly, that any good coming here may be sure of a very good house; and, secondly, that our Town Hall is not near large enough for tho place. There must have been between 500 and 600 people in the hall last night, and that was fully 200 more than could be seated comfortably. The company perform at Wajpawa to-night, where they are sure to again draw a goo! house."

On his return from a visit to England, the Hon. Mr Davies, of Victoria, was interviewed by a representative of the Melbourne Daily Telegraph. In reply to n question about frozen meat, Mr !L)avies snid : "I find that very little information has been given to the English public regarding; Australian frozen mutton, and that many are in the habit of purchasing inferior English mutton under the belief that it is Austratraliau. The butcher with whom he dealt did a largo trade in Kensington. In answer to an order for Australian mutton, he sent me some inferior English. I told him it was not Australian. Ho retorted it was. I said I was from Australia, and knew the Australian mutton when I saw it. He replied, " Oh, you mean real Australian mutton, do you 'i then I' will send yoft some ;" and from that time the right article was sent to my household, and it proved much superior to English mutton. Me Davies gave some other instances to show the English public were deceived concerning Australian mutton, and concluded by suggesting that a good agency, earned on in a mox - e vigorous way than was the case at present, with advertisements in the newspapers, would have to be established before the English people would appreciate the Australian article as they should.
