THE MAYOR'S PROPOSALS.
+ [to the editor.] Sib,—Can you toll mo why the Mayor's scheme for the protection and ornamentation of Marine Parade should includo the leasing of Mr Browning's sections for a playground for the "District school children ? Tho answer is of course that the sections are to be given to the children as a quid pro quo for the portion of Clive Square proposed to he out up for building sites, but I fail to see whore the claim comes in to make the exchange necessary. Tho Corporation did not select the site for the school, and has nothing to do with its management, or its economy. The portion of Clive Square proposed to be cut up is, in its present state as a playground, a disgrace to the town, and the children's games are a source of danger to traffic. The protection of Marine Parade is a necessity, and its ornamentation desirable in every way ; but I think owners of property along that thoroughfare should contribute to the cost by either a special rate, or a direct contribution. If Clive Square can be utilised in a financial way by all means let it be done. I may point out that Mr Browning's sections in wet weather form a lake of mud and water, and would be, •without filling in, entirely unsuited for a playground.—l am, &c, * JS> A RATEPAYER.
