A man named Phipps, a copk on board the brig Wake, met with a serious accident this morning. He was working at a handwinch while loading tallow, when the man on the second handle missed his hold. The Colonial Engineer reports it will cost £8000 to repair the damage to tb,e Oamaru breakwater in the recent galea, and £2000 more to make it safe against future damage. A spit has formed round the head of the breakwater, but it can be removed by dredging from time to time. Proposals have been submitted to the Board by which, the money can be raised upon application to Parliament. The security will be derived from extra rates on the district.
