WEANEE ROAD BOARD.

[own cobeespondent.]

The ordinary monthly meetir.g of this Board waa held at the Greemneadows' Hotel last evening. Present: Messrs Drummond (chairman), Orr, Heslop, Stotbart, Martin, O'Shannassy, and M'Donald. Correspondence was read from the Hawke's Bay County Council, stating that most likely the County Engineer, if requested, would attend on the Board and point out the position of the proposed bridge over the Ngaruroro, it being understood that such attendance would be at the Board's expense.—Received. From Mr G. Heslop, in reply to a letter asking him to give a line of road as a continuation of a proposed road through the estate.flfitfhe late Mr Burke in lieu of the boiling-down route : — Chesterhopo, 23rd Septsmber, 1886, to the Clerk Meaneeßoad Board. Dear Sir,—l regret that I cannot give the line asked for in your note of the 11th inst. in lieu of the boiling-down route, for the simple reason that it has not been sfcown that a majority of the ratepayers ■want it, and it has been argued that the No. 1 line will be a serious question for the ratepayers. How much more so will the second line be, necessitating, as it does, a very expensive bridge, and within a very short distance of the No. 1 line. The deviation jnsked for by myself in_ the boiling-down line, is reasonable, and in the interest of .the district, perhaps not at the pt : esfint time, but in the near futnro. ¥ours faithfully, Gfiorgo Hp'slop.—Messrs Orr, McDonald nnd Stothart considered, as Mr Heslop declined to give the line asked for, he should give the Txriling-down line as previously arranged without any deviation. —Mr Heslop was willing to give the lino with' the deviation asked for, which he stated ■would not make more than three or four chains' difference in the distance. He certainly would not give the lino as at first arranged, as he found it would divide five (if his paddocks into angles, while the line he proposed would not do so, and would have the advantage of being on higher land. It waß decided, on the motion of Mr Orr, seconded by Mr McDonald, "That the members of the Meanee and Papakura Wards form a committee to inspect Mr Heslop's proposed deviation in the boilingdown line, and report on the matter at the next meeting of (he Board."—Mr Hesjop jWmised to attend and point out the line suggested by him.

FHOPOSED BBIDOB SITE. The Chairman thought it was time some definite arrangements were come to in respect to this matter, as the question had beejn before the Board for a considerable time, and nothing had as yet been done. He thought the Board should take the necessary steps to get the site of the bridge properly defined. Mr O'Shannassy moved, seconded by Mr Heslop,' '.' Tftat ■ the cjerk vrite Lo the County Engineer, askinjf him to accompany the Board, and point out and mark the proposed site for tne bridge over the Ngaruroru river. An amendment was moved by Mr Orr, seconded by Mr M'Donald, " That no further steps be taken in the matter of tho proposed T**adale-Hastings road until the gentlemen promising subscriptions for the Bams hand into the Board promissory notes, due at six months, for the amounts pro- ** The amendment was ?Ut *° the meeting, the : voting being: — For, Messrs Orr, |i*Dop4 d ) a # d §tothart; against, Messrs P'Shannassy,' Heslop,' Martin, and Brurjajcond. • "The amendment was declared lost, and the original motion was then put a&4 carried; MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Orr asked if the petition with tho names of subscribers was in the hands of the Board. The clerk explained it was not, as it was taken by the person charge of it, with the intention of presenting it to the County Council. Mr O'Shanuassy said he would undertake to produce it at the next meeting of the Board. 'Tenders for the formation of about 40 chains in Church-road were received from Messrs Hogan and Morgan, at 15s per chain; Mr H. Harrison, at 12s per chain ; M. Sullivan, at 13s per chain; and W. Kirkham, at 11s 9d per chain.—On the motion of Mr Martin, seconded by Mr O'Shannassy, it was decided to accept the tender of Mr W. Kirkham. The Chairman and Mr Orr reported that they had visited the bridge at Meanee on the land of Mr McDonald, which is the alleged obstruction that has been complained of to a watercourse. They were of the opinion that the bridge was not the least obstruction to the flow of water as there was a width of at least twelve feet" for the passage of water, but the creek wanted cleaning out, as the water could not get away in consequence of the creek being Mcd with raupo, &c.-The work would involve a great expenditure.— No action taken. In reference to another drain at Meanee, it was resolved that the clerk write to the County Council asking that body to clear out the drain running from the county road through the Graesmere estate. The passing of a small account amounting to £4 2s brought the meeting to a close.
