Entering the straight tho order was still the same, Flemiugton having a two lengths' lead. Beforo tho stand was reached tho three closed up and passed tho box all together in a lino, except Wallabi, already toiling hopelessly in tho rear. Shortly afterwards tho want of condition told on Flemingtou, and he dropped back beaten, and ouly two wero left in the race. At tho back of tho courso 110-culaneurti drew ahead and established a good lead, but Hearing the turn Waitiri was let out and entered tho straight a length in front of tho Poverty Bay horse. (Per Watt vtipu at Wellington.) Tho Sydney Morning Herald of tho 4 th instant states:—" The news of tho victory of Shoe. Anchor was received by tho crowd with silence, and after discussing tho result for a fow minutes, tho assemblago slowly melted away, leaving only t\ fow seedy haugors-on of tho tii-f _ in possession of the roadway, and these, seeing they were conspicuously prominent, soon

merged into ordinary passers-by. Very few of tho Sydney public have gained by Shoot Anchor's triumph, Nordenfcldt, Despot, and Trenton being idols of speculation, but in Melbourne and Ballarat ho was heartily supported." The special correspondent of tho Herald wired as follows;—" The severity of tho paeo told on Ceriso and Blue, St. John, Metal, and Brown and Rose, and then ensued tho most desperate struggle that was over run for a big race iv Australia. Sheet Anchor, Trenton, Grace Darling, Nordenfcldt and Minerva raced up tbo straight at a terriifio pace, and at each stride the quartette were gaining on Sheet Anchor. Trenton, who had been disappointed at tho entrance to tho straight, was answering overy call, and Nordenfcldt, who was interfered with at the distance post, had much to contend against, all being locked in a bunch. With whip and spurs at work, thoy flashed past the post, and even the judgo was unequal to the task of separating them, for ho placed Shoot Anchor first, Blink Bonny second, and Trenton third ; whereas, as a matter of fact, it was Sheet Anchor, Grace Darling, and Trenton, who were not a head clour of _Toi_enfot-t. Tho numbers as first hoisted were flashed, all over tho colonies, aud as tho judge, Mr Wnkeley, also made a serious error with regard to tho Derby, it becomes the duty of tho club to ask him to resign."
