SPORTING NOTES.

' [By i( Hirro."] The annual report and balance-sheet of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club for the financial year ending 30th April, 1885, must bo considered a very satisfactory one. During the year the club gave away £4200 oh in stakes as against £3228 5s the year before. From tho totalisator the club received £2022 18s ad last year, against £1265 12s 10d the year before. ' Tho sale of booths, cards, &v., realised £513 ss, against £187 15s tho year before. The gates and stands brought in £210.5 19s 10d last year, and £1035 19s 8d the year before. From nominations, &c, the club received £1-155, asrainst £1468 the year before. There was a falling off of £13 in the amount of nominations received, but all the other sources of revenue show an increase. If to these sums we add the members' subscriptions and training fees, this will make tho sura of £G6l's 11s Id, which after deducting the amount of stakes loaves £2409'6s Id from which to pay working expenses, improvements, kc. The balance sheet before this showed a surplus of assets over liabilities of £1740 2s, and now the surplus it) £3,572 11s sd. Notwithstanding the miserable weather the Waipawa Racing Club had for their JXutunin meeting good fields, and the cßib must have cleared nearly £100 on the day's meeting. Johnny Armstrong ■was to be seen out for an exercise at this meeting, in one case very conspicuously. This rider wants more practice in the noble art of riding a stiffened horse properly, and 'I'would advise him in future not to try and overdo tlie thing rigaiu by ■apparently flogging his horse as lie passes the judge's box •when he is coming hi three or fcur chains "behind the winning horse. Riders as a rule do not do this after the race is won. Had the handicapper for Petane been there to see, I think some of the weights for these races would have been altered.

The acceptances for the Pctaiio races according' to the programme as advertised in the papers close on Tuesday, May 1-ith. Now next Tuesday is the 12th, the 1-itli is on Thursday, perhaps tlic Secretary will correct the mistake, and state before too late which is the correct day for acceptances. It is also to be honed that in connection with these races, the" club will be able to arrange for a late train from the Spit to Hastings on the evening of the races, by so doing they ■vvili increase their attendance greatly. ■Ttfii' , Auckland correspondent to the Referee slnfcgs that Mr J. Bennett's yearling colt by riiwtforioiiH— YaUerina, together with. Sunray will be whipped for Sydney. Thi.-i will be a feather for Piscntorious, us I hoar this colt .spoken of as being- a very f ..ir one, and one likely to do credit to his sire. The Petane races will be robbed of a o-ood deal of intercut through several oi 1 ho horses nominated being out of the district, and so not able to take pare in the races. Director left for Wellington last Wednesday Leonato has gone to Gisborne, Claude Is still in Auckland, Emir Bey's owner says «g will not start him again, and Kineraig Seems fonder of nominating and paying up than of starting. If all these drop out the Starters will be of a very medium class.

On the morning of the Waipawa races there was picked up on the Hastings railway station platform a die, which contained three fives, two sixes, and one four on its several surfaces. This must have been 'a great loss to the owner on that day. It must either have belonged to an "under and over" or a "Yankee grab" gentleman. Whoever it belongs to, lam willing to inform them of the name of the finder, if they like to apply to me.
