WAIPAWA.

(FROM OTJE OWN COREESrfeDENT.)

May 4,

Somo largo bags of ducks Avere made about here on the Ist May, and many of the grey species were cooked yesterday although none came my way. The fact is I am not a sportsman, but merely an enthusiastic newsmonger. I saw one gentleman accompanied by a gun and a dog, working his Avay up the Ruataniwha road in a blinding rain, and ventured to say it was a bad day for sport, whereupon he replied, that it Avas splendid weather for ducks. I found in the eA'ening that he was quite right as among others, Colonel Herrick and party shot 95 couples on the Te Aute lake during the day.

I was sorry to find that Mr Fleming Norton was unable to make a house on Saturday evening. His performance deserved a better reception but r la. short notice—only a day in this case—will not do for WaipaAva, where there is a mere handful of people resident, and advance agents will do avcll to intimate the intentions of their principals at the oarlicst moment, so i that the country folks may bo cognisant of intentions.

I see you have got hold of that little bit of private history about "Director's" owner and tho winner of the sweop. But for the bargain in question the big prize in Jacob Faithful's lottery Avould not have como to Waipawa.

The annual distribution of prizes to the children attending St. Peter's Sundayschool Avas made yesterday, when a number of valuable and choice books Avere given; also, the prizes and certificates of merit awarded by the Bishop of Waiapu in connection Avith the examination lately held by him. The Rev. J. C. Eccles, incumbent of St. Peter's made tho distribution.
