Notwithstanding the threatening aspect of the weather, about one hundred left town by .special train, many, however, left by the ordinary train so as to get there early. At every station additions were made to the numbers so that the attendance is good. The course of course is frightfully heavy, especially at the back, and the time will all be slow. The Waipawa Band was on the ground and at intervals gave musical selections. HANDICAP nUEDLES. Of 30 soys., two miles. W. Dennett's Fausrh-a-ballagh, 9st -lib 1 Ellingham's Denbigh, list 4lb .. 2 Douglas' Flcmington, Ost Sib ~ 3 —Gilpin's Pastime list lib, also ran. Director was scratched very late. Faugh-a-ballagh got oil' with the lead followed by Denbigh. The pace Avas very slow. At the back of the course Faugh-a-ballngh led by five lengths. Entering the straight they began to close up, though it was evident Pastime, who was pulling double for the first mile, would not try. At the last hurdle Faugh-a-ballagh came away and won by two lengths, the same distance separating die second and third. Dividend £-1 l'Js. HACK HURDLE EACH, Of 10 soys. Rimu .. . . .. 1 —A clever win. Dividend £1 18s. SKLLINO- BACK, Of 30 soys'; U- miles. Mr Gollan's Oberon, Sst 71b .. .. 1 Mr Hunter's Mystery, 7st 10lb .. . . 2 Mr Howse'a Wallaby, 7st lib .. .. 3 —Bushranger got oft , with the lead. Passing the stand the first time, Oberon led with Wallaby second arid Mystery third, the •MiMt; tailing oif. At the back of the course Mystery took the lead, and henceforward only two wore in the race—Oberon and Mystery, and a ding-dong race ensued for the rest of the distance. Entering the straight Clifford on Oberon soon had the filly in trouble, and won a good race by a length, Wallaby an indifferent third, the others distanced, one or two being nearly a quarter of a mile behind. Dividend, £'A l'ss. The winner was bought in for forty-two guineas. MAY DAY HANDICAP, Of 100 soys: 1£ miles. Mr Barren's Dh'LCtor, 7st 21b .. 1 Mr Gollan's Leonato, Ost 41b .. .. 2 Mr Edward's Karironia, Gst lib .. 3 —Morris's Amazon, and Dennett's Ugly Buck also ran. A splendid start was effected, Leonato talcing the lead followed by Director. As the}' ploughed through the ground at the back Leonato was eased a little, Amazon taking , second place. Passing the stand the first time the order was Director, Leonato, Amazon, and Ugly Buck last. At the back of the course the order was much the same, with only two horses in it. Entering the straight the pace was increased, and the whip was brought to Leonato, but Wood sittingdown on Director, the race was never in doubt. Director was well handled and won easily by six lengths. Dividend, £3 2s.
