THIRD EDITION.

The meeting of provisional directors of the Hawke's Bay Woollen Company that was adjourned till to-day, was again adjourned sine die. The first adjournment was due to the critical state of the AngloRussian difficulty, it being thought unadvisable to float a company at such a time. As there is no appearance of a more peaceful condition of affairs the promoters have postponed further operations.

We hear that Mr W. C. Smith has reported to the Government on the subject of the position held by Mr M. T. McGrath in the Public Works Department. Mr Smith, it is understood, feels aggrieved at Mr McGrath being in a position to buy posts where he likes. Mr Smith is, perhaps, very much to bo pitied, but he will yet have to learn that it is not he who is referred to in the first Commandment.

As showing how singularly misinformed was the Minister for Public Works on the subject of the necessity for a goods train, wo may mention that yesterday, the morning up-train had fifteen trucks of timber for Napier, the goods train brought up twenty more truckloads, and had to leave seven others at Takapau, while at Makotuku, and other sidings there is any quantity of t:Y.v v awaiting carriage.

The defaulters' list has now been mado up, and as a consequence 279 ratepayers do not figure on the rolls. Iv the event of an election these men will lament their fate, but in the meantime they will figure before our worthy R.M., when they will bo asked to pay their rates with costs.

The usual weekly meeting of the Clivo Square Mutual Improvement Association was held hist evening. The room was crowded with members and visitors. The main business of the evening was a debate on the question "Is the Nationalisation of the Land desirable?" The debate was 02>cned on the affirmative side by Mr G. White and in the negative by Mr J. S. Welsmau. A lively discussion ensued Messrs H. Hill and E" A. llaggen taking part iv it as visitors. After tho openers had replied the chairman took the vote of tho members on the subject. It was found that there was a largo majority in favor of the affirmative side of the subject.

The next block of land to be put in the market will bo a portion of the Tautane, which will be ready in June. By that time

3000 or 4000 acres will be surveyed and roads made to them, so that it can be placed ou tho market.

Mr Remenyi pays his promised return visit here tho first week in May, giving his first concert on the Gth of that month; playing for two nights.

The. Commissioner of Crown Lands said at the meeting of the Waste Lauds Board to-day that considering 50,000 acres had recently been granted to special settlements, tho competition for the Maharahara block was very great indeed and testified to tho value of the land.
