Mr Dalley moved the second reading of the Land Bill in the Council yesterday, and in an eloquent speech gave the history of the land laws of tho colony. While he eulogised Mr Robertson, he showed where the pi-esent law failed. The debate was adjourned till Tuesday. Mr Buchanan's motion in the Assembly, that on attention being called to the presence of strangers the question be put without debate, was negatived on division by 41 to 37, whereupon Mr Buchanan had the galleries cleared. The new railway policy of the Government will include a scheme for extending the railway from Redfern into the city.
An enquiry has been commenced by the Marine Board into the collision of the steamers Barrabool and Birksgate. A number of witnesses have been examined. The evidence is very contradictory. The enquiry stands adjourned. The Agricultural Society's Exhibition was opened to-day, and all sections are fairly well represented. Brisbane, August M.
The libel action, Ebenozer Thornc, proprietor of tho Southern World, against the proprietor of tho Nord AustralischoZcituutr, resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff for £50 damages and costs. Alexander Kaff is appointed a member of the Legislative Council, vice Mr Thorndon, deceased.
