The ordinary meeting of the Municipal Council takes place this evening at the usual hour. The Napier Chamber of Commerce Committee met at 2 p.m. to-day, to consider the subjects to be brought before the conference of delegates from the Chambers of Commerce in New Zealand, at Wellington, on September 15. At the regular fortnightly meeting of the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade, held last night, the sum of six guineas was voted out of members' private fund to the cabman Avho conveyed the small-pox patient from tho Spit to the Hospital. j "We are informed that Fisher's Burlesque and Dramatic Company open hero on tho 30th of the present month. Southern papers speak very highly of them. Their agent avill arrive in toAvn this evening to make the necessary arrangements for their appearance. With regard to tbe recommendation of the Napier Chamber of Commerce in the matter of the arrival of the inland mails, we understand that the authorities at Wellington have noAV under consideration the advisability of forwarding these mails by the train reaching toAvn at 9.25 a.m. We are glad to hear that latest accounts from tho quarantine station report the good health of Dr Jackson and the attendants. The Board of health to-night, Aye understand, will consider the steps to be taken, with regard to the defamatory telegram published in the Wellington Evening Press. With a view to affording greater encouragement for the A'accination and re-

vaccination of persons over fourteen years of age, the Government has decided to extend to such of those persons as may be desirous of taking advantage thereof the privilege of free vaccination. Dr Caro is the public vaccinator for the district of Napier. We remind parents and guardians of boys having good A r oices and a taste for music, of the invitation to send them this eA'ening to St. John's school-room, for examination for the choir, at 7.30 o'clock. A seat in a church choir is a very high privi- - lege, for it secures gratis a musical educa- j tion, and the present opportunity should not be thrown away. The quarantine having been taken off tho Hospital, the members of the visiting committee paid a visit to the institution yesterday. We are glad to hear that, notwithstanding the enforced confinement to the building and grounds, the patients, as well as the Surgeon-Superintendent and the attendants, Avere none the worse for their fortnight's seclusion from the outer world. All appealed cheerful, and there were no complaints.

A shareholder in the Hawke's Bay Gold Mining and Prospecting Company, and avlio signs himself " Kereru Flat," writes us a long letter on the results of tlit, last crushing, and expresses surjirise that, while in that case there Avas not the color of gold, in the one conducted by Mr McLeod gold was found. He concludes his letter by trusting that in the event of prospecting being continued there will be a change in the system of management.

Messrs Cazneau. and Connolly, some time ago, offered, through their local manager, to present the Corporation with a shield containing the photographic portraits of tho members of the Municipal Council. At the last sitting of the Public Works Committee a discussion arose about this offer, Avheu one of the members said he would not have his portrait taken for £20. This fell as a severe blow on the members, Avho reluctantly Avero then obliged to give up the idea.

Saturday's Post says : — " Mr. J. A. Wood, avlio has been appointed to represent tho Government Insurance Department at Napier, left for his neAV sphere of labors by the Te Anau last night. Just before the A r essel moved away from the wharf a number of Mr. Wood's football friends met him in the saloon, and presented him with a gold locket, suitably inscribed by Messrs Kohn and Co. In making the presentation, _r. G. Campbell, captain of the Athletic Club, alluded to the regret felt at the loss of such a valuable athlete as Mr. Wood, and expressed a hope that the health of the latter, Avhich has not been very good of late, Avould be improved by a residence in a dry climate like that of Napier. The recipient acknowledged the compliment paid him. Three hearty cheers Avere given for Mr. Wood as the To Anau moved into the stream."
