HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.

This Day.

Tho Council met at 10 30 a.m. Present: Messrs Sutton (chairman), J. N. Williams, J. G.Kinross, G.Rymer, J.A.Cunningham, and P. Dolbel. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. The Chairman read the schedule of accounts for tho month, showing an expenditure of £062 15s 2d. Tho overdraft was stated to be £4027, after payment of the month's vouchers. Tho accounts were passed for payment. correspondence.

From Public Works Department, declining to accede to the request for a further contribution for the diversion of the

N-mvuroro river, and stating that the department had permanently taken over the supervision of the work. From Mr Hudson, in reference to the avoidance of "Marshall's crossing" onPohui road. —Dealt with in the Engineer's report, which was adopted, and a resolution was carried to apply to the Government for a grant in aid, to the amount of £400 to carry out the construction of the road, in the meantime the work to be proceeded with. From Mr Carter, complaining of a proposed drain from a slaughterhouse atTaradale.—Ordered to be referred to the Inspector in the event of a nuisance being discovered.

RErOKTS. From tho Inspector of Slaughter-houses reporting that all the houses were properly conducted. From tho Road Overseer, on progress made on county road repairs during the month, as follows : — Napier-Te Auto Road.—The necessary metal repairs to portions of this road have been attended to where required, and also willow planting at Galbraith's corner has been carried on so as to protect the county road from the river encroachments. This road is in very good order for traffic. Tareha's Bridge-Hakawai Road.—Metal repairs between Tareha's bridge and Taradalo have been carried on where required, and the authorised willow planting along the river bauk between Pukctapu and Hakawai to protect the county road at this place has made good progress during the month.

Mcanec-Pawhakairo Road.—Tho portion washed away by the late floods has been made good, and it is now in fiir order for traffic. New Taradalc-Rcdclyffc Road—There are four metal teams steadily employed metalling and widening this road as authorised, and it is in good order for traffic.

RedclyfJe-Omalru Road.—As authorised I have put in one 12-inch tile culvert near tho Korokipo gate to carry off surplus water from the adjacent hills. On examining the small bridge near the Omahu mill I found it necessary to re-plank same, cost £12. Tho extra stay piling authorised for the Omahu-Ngaruroro bridge will be commenced as soon as the water subsides, so as the pile driving gear can be worked with economy. Woodtliorpc-Patca Road.—Eleven surface men have been employed during tho winter months removing slips and cleaning out water-tables and putting in tile culverts where required. It has been in good order for traffic all through the winter, owing to the metalling of that bad portion between Barricade Creek and Kuripapanga.

Rissington-Patoka Road.—Three surfacemen are employed putting in tile culverts and attending to surface repairs. It is in good order for traffic. petitions. From sixteen ratepayers of Pctano praying that the Pctane Road Board may be merged in the County Council. The petition was shown to be in accordance with the Act, all necessary formalties having been complied with.—On tho motion of Mr Cunningham it was resolved that the further consideration of the petition bo adjourned till next meeting of the Council, and that in the meantime the Road Board be advised that, if complied with, the county will levy Road Board rates in the district, in accordance with section 39 of the Counties Act.

A petition was read from twenty-two ratepayers of the Puke'tapu and Pctane districts, praying that tho county take over the road from Puketapu to Pctane.—Consideration postponed till next meeting, in the meantime the Road Inspector to report on cost of formation and maintenance of the road. The Council then adjourned.
