POLITICAL.
Thames, This day. ; Mr J. A. Cadman, M.H.R.,for Coromandel, addressed his constituents here last night. There was a very large attendance. Mr Cadman's speech was mainly directed to giving an account of the proceedings of last session, particularly in reference to local • matters and the changes in tho laws relating to mining matters. In relation to the future he saw no reason to shift from the position he had occupied in the past as an Opposition member. A vote of thanks and confidence . was passed unanimously. There is some talk here of inviting Sir Julius Vogel to reserve himself for the '. Thames seat at the general election. . The J suggestion comes from some of the electors < who supported his candidature for this seat - years ago, when he ran second to Sir ■'■ George Groy. .Should the request be made ; to Sir Julius Vogel, and ho accepts it, ; probably a similar request would be made : to Sir George Grey. ' Marton, This day. Mr Stevens, M.H.R., addressed a largo ; meeting of his constituents hero on Monday '. night, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. He declared that during the ensuing session he houtd act as an independent member. Nelson, This day. Mr Hursthouse, M.H.R., is addressing his constituents. At tho Upper Motueka meeting ho advocated retrenchment in all branches of the Government service as a means of removing the present depression. He refused to pledge himself to any course of action during the next session, preferring to wait to see what was brought forward. He received a vote of confidence. Christchurch, This day. Mr Allwright, M.H.R., addresed his constituents at Lyttelton last night, and received a vote of thanks and confidence.. He said he would not vote to turn the present Government out till better men could be substituted, though the present- Government had deteriorated since the departure of Sir John Hall. ;
