ARRANGEMENTS FOR GOLD PROSPECTING IN TUHUA COUNTRY.
I Wanganui, Thursday. _ ' The question of opening up a goldfield in the Tuhua country is causing considerable stir in town just noAV, tho matter having been re-opened by iioavs from the natives that fresh gold has been discovered ._ The land is the property of natives avlio in tho past have been strongly opposed to Europeans going there, though gold was known to exist in the place many years ago. Now, however, Major Kemp states that the upriver chiefs arc agreeable to let Europeans prospect, and that they promise to assist in every Avay. A public meetiug Avas in consequence called last Saturday evening to consider tho matter, and the Government Avere communicated Avith, but thoy would not send any reply to the committee that Avas appointed to draft resolutions and put something difmitc before an adjourned public meeting which avu.h bold on Wednesday evening. Fully 400 persons avctc present. The committee placed the result of their efforts boforo the meeting, and. it Avas agreed that it at as desirable to send a prospecting party to Tuhua, and also that it was desirable to form a prospecting company to carry out the proposal. . Major Kemp Avas present, and stated that the uprir'cr chiefs were quite agreeable to a party going at once, and suggested that a party be sent to meet the chiefs at a big korcro to bo held at Koromiti. Full consent would then bo giA-en, and the party Avould proceed to the spot where gold is alleged to have bcon found. A company with a capital of £500 in 500 shares of £1 each, with os per share paid up, was formed, to give the affair a start, as it is thought that if gold is discovered it Avill be a great thing for the district. There Avere 200 shares taken up in town.
