THE NAPIER HIGH SCHOOL.
Report for 188.3. Tho attendance at the High School during tho present year has very decidedly increased, the number on the register for the last quarter being 03, as against 52 for the last quarter of the previous year. Under tho zealous teaching of Mr Morton, the second master, the standard of attainments reached by the third form has been raised considerably. Science has this year been taught regularly for tho first time, in the form of lessons founded on Professor Bickerton's book recently published, and on Professor Roscoe's Chemistry, Avith experiments showing various tests for metals, the nature and properties of different gases, &o. The books in Latin read this year by the most advanced pupils Avorc the two first books of Horace's Odes and Sallust's Catiline. The books read, and tho subjects taught Avere, in other respects, the same as those of last year. 11. S. Tiffen, Esq., has intimated his intention of again repeating his generous gift of gold and and silver medals to the two pupils who have the highest number of aggregate marks at the annual examination. These medals have this year been gained by Arthur Hunter and Harold Bold. The prizes this time are allocated on a somewhat different system from that adopted formerly. Instead of giving three prizes for each subject in each form only one is this year intended to be given ; but, on the other hand, it has been resolved to give three prizes in each form to tho pupils having tho highest aggregate of marks. Tho boys havo this year, as formerly, been divided into four forms, according to their advancement and proficiency ; but, in addition, there Avas, towards the end of tho year, an initial or preparatory form, consisting of those Avho joined later in tho year, and avlio Avill form tho neucleus of the first form at the beginning of the next term. The pressure of the increasing numbers, in proportion to the existing staff, is felt chiefly in the first and second forms, and the head master ventures to express the hope that after another year the Board of Governors may bo able to see their Avay to tho appointment of a fourth master for the school.
