THE PROPOSED NEW SUBMARINE CABLE. LORD ROSEBERRY ON THE VENTION.(Received December 10, 8 p.m.) SYDNEY. Monday. The following is the substance of the scheme which has been proposed by the Postmaster-General for laying , a submarine telegraph cable between Australia and America. Alternative routes arc suggested. According , to the first of these the line would be laid via New Caledonia, Fiji, and Honolulu, with a total length of GBSB knots, estimated to cost for a line by this route £2,000,000. If the alternative routebe followed the cable will bo taken from Auckland, the length being thus reduced to GSOO knots, and the estimated cost to £1,950,000. In this case, however, the existing Eastern Extension Company's cable from Nelson to Botany Bay must bo added to the estimate. The cost is to be
defrayed by the colonies jointly upon the basis of population. The share of New Zealand would thus be £260,000. Communications with reference to the scheme will be addressed to the New Zealand Government. (Received December 11, 12.30 p.m.) This day.
Lord Roscberry was present last night at a dinner given" by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and, in replying to the"toast of his health, spoke highly of the importance which must be attached to the late Intercolonial Convention, as marking a distinctive epoch in the history of the Australasian Colonies. In its resolutions regarding the convict question, the Convention, Lord Roscberry remarked, spoke with a power which could not be claimed by the colonies individually. The Convention spoke to tho whole world as the mouthpiece of a united nation determined to t.ike part in future events, and determined to control the as regards its individual self.
