WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following report, on the works in tho county wan read at tho Council meeting last Wednesday: — Tamuinu Hiding.—Tho contractor for tho Mangamakiki bridge is making satisfactory progress. Patangata Riding—The contract on tho Kaikoru-Patargata road is now being proceeded with, also the contract on tho Kaikora-Tamumu road. A new contract on the same road has been prepared. Tho approach to the Homewood bridgo is becoming dangerous, and it will bo necessary to stop tho traffic while repairs are being made. Notice will, however bo given bofore doing so. Waipawa Riding—Tho late wet weather has caused a heavy landslip on the road to Waipawa railway station, forcing out of position tho original breastwork. I woultr recommend that a piled breastwork be constructed on original line of fenoo, thereby widening tho road at that place, and making a permanent job of it. A now contract lias been prepared for works on tho Hampden road. Tho Manganoake bridge is proceeded with, and otherwise tho main roads in the riding arc in fair order.
Eparaiina Riding—The contractor for carting metal on W tin stead road has made a .start, but owing to bad woathor lias been able to do very little, Tho Wanstcad contract is being pushed on as fast as possible. Applications have been invited from contractors for breaking a further supply of metal in Hartreo's quarry. Porangahau Riding.—l have gone over the proposed road from Canning's place, following the river to Porangahau, and find that a very good road could be got, about one mile and a half longer than tho present road, at an approximate cost of £3000, exclusive of a bridge over ilio Porangahau river, and compensation for land required. The roads in tho riding continue very bad, and about 25 chains of road through Porangahau township required metalling. If funds permit, I would re • commend that this be done. The contractor for Wainui bridge lias not yet made a start, having had some trouble in getting his timber on tho ground.
( Woodvillc Riding.—l have been unable to visit Woodvillc since last meeting, but I hear the roads are getting bad again owing to the rain.
Seventy-mile Bush Road.—Tho road from Woodville to T.ahoraito is in very good order, but on the Norsewood side is getting cut unA badly.
Norsewood Riding.—Owing to tho wot weather the roads in this riding aro also getting cut up.
Ruataniwha Riding.—The contract on
the Takapau Ashley-Clinton road is now completed. To make the whole road from Takapau to Ashcott suitable for wheeled traffic would require a further expenditure of about £120. R. A. BnowN , , County Engineer.
