SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

Notes by "Hippo."

I visited Mr Douglas' station during the Aveck, and am sorry to have to report that his mure Sweet briar—dam of Chancellor, Minerva, and Briar—foaled a dead foal to Jav'lin the other day. This gentleman has some nice yearlings. Tho one that took my fancy most avus a good looking son of Jav'lin's out of aTraducer mare. He is a very even-made youngster, showing lots of

quality, anel, if looks go for anything, should one day give a good account of himself. There avus also a Musket colt out of Venture, and a nice looking Musket filly out of Uira, these being his two well-known steeplechase mares. Mr Douglas informs me that he intends to send the last named mare and Cascade to visit Musket this season. Loch Lomond and Briar are both in training on the station. Tasman, the winner of the New Zealand Cup, has started in thirty-nine races, of which he has won twenty-three, and ran second nine times. He has Avon about £3700. I see that Ross, Mr Allan McLean s trainer, has got Louie in hand. After last autumn's meeting she was fired anel turned out. Time only will show Avhether she will stand a preparation. Mischief is expected back from Canterbury by to-day's boat. She Avon £-150 5s at the Christchurch meeting. This mare has Avell paid for herself, having Avon over £2000 sinco her present owner purchased her. It is to be regretted that the meeting of delegates of the different Racing Clubs of the "colony, which avus to have taken place at Christchurch during the race week, for the purposG of forming a New Zealand Racing Association, did not come off, and is postponed sine die.
