Letters of naturalisation havo been granted to Andrew Mortensen Miller, settler, of Danevirk.

Tho Hon. J. N. Wilson, the Hon. Sir G. S. AVhitmore, and Mr Sheehan arrived from Wellington yesterday.

His Excellency the Governor has appointed Mr Frederick Shugar to he a member of the Licensing Committee for tho district of Norsewood, vice Mr H. M. Lund.

AA r o hear that the Lawn Tennis Club is in treaty with Mr F. Tuxford for the transfer of his lease of the vacant section between his residence and tho Masonic Hall. Tho club now numbers a large membership, and tho want of suitable ground is much felt.

The San Francisco mail steamer Australia arrived at 2 30 a.m. to-day at Auckland, punctual to her time-table date. Tho Hawke's Bay portion of the English mail will be despatched from Auckland by tho s.s. Taiaroa, that leaves thcro at Go clock this evening.

Dr. AAllkins, tho oculist and aurist left on Saturday per steamer for Christchurch, where he resides. Tho doctor has performed several operations during the wcok ho has been in Napior with tho most satisfactory results. Dr. AVilkins is a gentleman of very largo experience, and we may oxpect him amongst us again in about four to simonths.

Tho Hoason for tree, shrub, and flower planting, which is now nearly over, has, as usual, developed an average amount of petty thieving. Owners of gardens havo had to deplore the loss of many plants of special value, and in the Botanical grounds it is of little use planting out rare or boauti» ful shrubs, for thoy almost instantly disappear. If somebody got six months hard labor for robbery of this kind botanical instincts might rise superior to picking and stealing.

The arrival of the Southern steamer yesterday again converted Sunday night into a busy time for mercantile men. Tho mail was sorted, and the private pos'. boxes were opened by 3 p.m., and merchants and others had at once to reply to their Southern correspondence to catch tho overland Monday's mail. Not to mention tho enforced _ employment of cabs and horses, clerks and lightermen, tho Sunday steamer, cither from the North or tho South, is an unmitigated nuisance.

In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before Captain Preece, R.M, David Higgins and AVilliam Johnston, charged with drunkenness, were each fined (is mid noflte, or in default 48 hours imprisonment. Flora Montizcna and Margaret Colder were remanded, ns lunatics, tho former uui.il Monday, 24th instant, for medical examination, and the latter until to-morrow. The summons caso against Frank AVilliams for a breach of the Destitute Persons Act was adjourned until tomorrow. Very good progress is being made by the contractors for the erection of tho new wing at the hospital. The additions to the building comprise a largo ward for females, a children's ward, and matron's and nurses apartments. These rooms are entered hy a,

passage in continuation of tho present main hali. ° When finished it is intended to remove the female patients to the new ward, and that which is now occupied by them will bo converted into an extra male ward. Thus the children and females, with tho matron and nurses, will be all in the same wing.

AYe call attention to Messrs Hoadlcy, Lyon and Go's land salo to-morrow. The sale is of a number of sections of town land in Violetsville, situated on the main road between AVoodville and Masterton. Xmm tho following description which we take from the AVairarapa Daily we may believe that tho now township is likely soon to grow into considerable importance :- It is stuated about two and thrco-quartei miles from tho Pahiatna native reserve, afc one extremity of the block and miles from thcMangatainokabridgoatthoothci extremity, and the townships being on the main coach road between AVellington and Napier, tho facilities for transport by road, (and in the near future by rail), cannot be overestimated. The site, 'moreover, is most conveniently and centrally situated for the branch roads from the Tiraumea portion of Pahiatna, and also for tho two roads from tho Mangatainoko block, which junction with the Masterton road—one just to the north of the township, and tho other a short distance south. As tho Mangatamoke block contains a largo area of land second to none in the colony for quality, and as it will at an early date bo sold and settled {vide, the able report of the committee appointed to report ou the settlement of Crown lands in AVairarapa East) it may be assumed that ■fcl.c-o roads will be tho mediums through which a very considerable amount of t rathe will be concentrated at tho railway station at no very distant date. The prospects of the town are most excellent, being, as we have shown, the centre of a largo district containing some of the best land in New Zeal-md; possessing a rapidly increasing population of settlers, noted'for their energy and perseverance. Production and business must increase at a very considerable rate, and wo expect to find that at no very remote period the growth of Violetsvillo will have surpassed the expectations of the most sanguine." The most flattering tribute to the merits of AVolfe's Schnapps, is to bo found in the fact that although repeatedly pirated and often imitated, nothing has ever been produced that even similates this matchless preparation.—[Advt. | ________
