MELBOURNE,
Thursday,
Mr Graham Berry, replying to the German Government's communication regarding the decisions of the Postal Conference held in Sydney in May last, has strongly urged the decisions sought to be laid down by the colonies in joining the General Postal Union.
The Dutch Consul-General in this city received a telegram this morning from Admiral Van Gogh, commanding the naval forces in Java, confirming the statement that a tremendous volcanic eruption had occurred in the Straits of Sunda, and that the charts of those seas can no longer be relied upon. The lighthouses in the Sunda jrroup have also been overthrown. ° This day.
Tho Ecv. Charles Strong has resigned the Scots Church charge, at the same _ time intimating that he does so from a desire to spare the congregation inconvenience arising from the action for libel which ho understands the Presbytery intend to institute against him in consequence of tho speech ho made on Wednesday last.
