HORACE BAKER, Chief Surveyor, Napier. District Survey Office, Napier, July 27, 1863. RE PAYMENT OF WORKMEN EMPLOYED ON CONTRACTS LET BY PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. A TTENTION is called to Clause 23 of jTjL the Conditions of Contract, which provides that workmen, tradesmen, and laborers of every class employed on the works to which these conditions refer shall be paid their wages in full in money, current coin of the colony, at least once in every fortnight, and no ticket or other system of payment by provisions, liquors or jroods will on any pretence be allowed. The workmen of every class shall be paid on the works if it be possible, or in some building adjoining, and in no case shall they be paid at a public-house or other place where liquors or refreshments arc sold. The penalty for any breach of this clause, as often as the same shall happen, is fifty pounds; and it is lawful for the Minister for Public Works, without any notice to the contractor, or any further process of law, to deduct the penalty or penalties from any moneys that may be due or owing to the contractor under this contract, or that may hereafter be due or owing thereunder. PUBLIC HEALTH. npHE following extracts from the Public JL Health Act, 1876, and Amendment Act, 1881, are published for general information :— Clause 28, The Public Health Act, 187 G. "When a Householder knows that a person within the house occupied by him is taken sick of small-pox, cholera, or any other highly infectious disease, dangerous to the people, he shall immediately givo notice thereof to the LOCAL BOARD of the district in which he dwells. If he refuses or neglects to give such notice he shall forfeit a sum not exceeding TEN POUNDS. It shnll be the duty of the Medical Practitioner in attendance on such case to state to the Householder, as early as possible, the infectious nature of such disease. Clause 2, Tire Public Health Act, 1876, Amendment Act, 1881. The following "words shall be read as an addition to Section 28 of "The Public Health Act, 1876 " :— "And also to give immediate notice thereof to the LOCAL BOARD of the district in which the patient resides; if ho refuses or neglects to give such notice ho shall forfeit a sum not exceeding TEN POUNDS: Provided that any Medical Practitioner so giving notice as above required shall bo entitled to receive from such Local Board the sum of 2/6 in respect of each case of which notice shall be given : Provided also that a Medical Practitioner shall not be entitled to payment in respect of more than three cases of the same disease reported from the same house during the course of one month."
