The Vandcrbilt fancy bill in New York in thus spoken ul' by a journal of one of the Southern States :—" The Vanderbilt dwelling house in which the recent fancy ball was μ-iven cost £800,000. Vanderbilt, £1.1,000,000 ; George Indian, £:;,000,000 ; (Jvrus Field, .£2,000,000, Arc The flowers cost £2000 ; Mrs W. K. VaiiderbiU'.s dress cost .€2OOO ; Mrs W. K. Vimderbilt's jewellery cost £300,000 ; the supper cost X'-UJOO: the entire expense of the ball, XIO,OOO. Y.:t in the city where all this wealth exists men and women were dying of starvation. The papers that give an account of the display of luxury record the death by suicide, by insanity, by starvation, of men and Avoincn who had tried in vain to get employment, and died because of failure and for want of food There must bo something- radically wrong in the very foundations of society when such violent contrasts exist. Of one thing wo may be sure, itnd that is a sham Republic. "Wo have American princes as well as European ; American paupers as well as European paupers. This i.s because our institutions arc only semi-Republican."
