This diiy. It is authoritatively stated here that a French steamer has hoisted the French iliijr on the Mallieol and Erromanga Islands in the Nqw Hebrides Group. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Government bill to authorise the construction of the trans-continental railway by a .syndicate was thrown out by a considerable majority. In consequence of this defeat it i.-s expected that tlio Ministry will ask for a dissolution of Parliament.
