A CORRECTION.
[To TnE Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —Allow me to correct an error that appears in your report of my evidence in the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day. Your report makes me reflect on the "storm Avater outlet" when a summer western wind is bloAving. My statement Avas, that the opening of tho main drain was not submerged, and A\ T as so placed as to alloAV tho westerly Avind to bIoAV right up it, and thence up the branch drains into the houses. AVhen it Avas considered that the Avost wind in summer Avas a hot wind, and possessed eminently decomposing properties, it Avas obvious that the drain as at present constructed was a standing menace to the health of the town. The " storm Avater outlet" is situated on the beach, so the Avestcrly Avind must blow all mephitic odours arising from it out to sea.—l am, i&C, Frederic Irving de Lisle. June 18, 1883. [Dr. do Lislo may have intended to say AA'hat he states above, but tho fact nevertheless remains that he did not do so. On referring to our reporter's notes avc find that what he did say was that " ho (Dr. da Lislo) did not know of it (the cesspool) being so dreadfully unpleasant; it Avas certainly not so unpleasant . . .as the toAA'ii drainage when a Avestcrly wind was bloAving*.'' In the hurry of transcribing our notes wo made Dr. do Lisle to have referred to tho " storm water outlet" instead of to the toAvn drains—Ed. D-T.].
