WAIROA.

[FROM OUR OAVN correspondent.] There is a terrible to do here over the Auckland Observer. Every literary man in the place is saying "it isn't me,"_ and the slandered ones are going about either with "fiddle-faces" or seeking someone to horsoAvhip. The Rev. AA. Lambert hit tho right nail on the head at the meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society Avhen ho said that the real aim of the Home Rule party Avas to got back ths lands of their forefathers Avhich had been—rightly or wrongly—confiscated in the past. This"assertion was met by cries of "no, no! " But I came across in an Irish paper a few days ago a very explanatory sentence, which I will ask you to let me quote Mr Davitt (founder of the Land League), speaking at Navan, said;—" The

time will soon come Avhen the men of the south Avill march doAvn in serried phalanxes from their native hills, and Avrcst back the lands which their forefathers lost." From a gentleman who recently came thorough from Gisborne I learn that the AVairoa-Gisbornc road contracts on the AVairoa side are being very creditably carried out, the Avork being much superior to that of the Cook County laborers.

There is a good deal of dissatisfaction existing at Frasertown respecting the locale of tho cemetery. The spot chosen (and nOAV being used) is certainly a very bad one, almost in the centre of the toAvnship, and but, a few yards from tho Border Hotel. Before the place becomes too crowded it Avould as Avell to select a bettor sito from a sanitary point of vieAV. AA r riting of cemeteries reminds me that the AVairoa cemetery is again dropping out of public remembrance. It is only Avhen a funeral takes place (an event fortunately rare in this healty locality) that complaints are made about the state of the road leading to the burial-ground. Might I suggest that tho Council Council should take over the management, as being Avithin the proper, functions of the local body. The amended Counties Act provides for this, and I am sure the change Avould result in a groat improvement in'the state of the approaches and tho enclosure generally. Mr Steveus (Into of Napier), who took over the Orerc property from Mr J. AY. AVitty on the AVairoa-Turiroa road, is making great improvements in the shape of "subduing the Avildcrness," flax, scrub, and briars disappearing as if by magic under his hand. These arc the sort of "improvements" we Avant, and not palatial residences and fine ornamented pleasure grounds, Avhich look very grand, but Avhich do not mean substantial progress. Tho application made by tho secretary of the Napier Harbor Board to the 'Wairoa County Council at their last meeting to find out the total value of ratable property in the AVairoa county has caused no little fluster here. It is generally considered as the prelude to including AVairoa in a rating district to provide funds for thencAV Napier harbor Avorks. The proceeding has certainly a great deal of unfairness in it; first, 10,000 acres of our best land was taken to endow the Napier High School, and noAv it is proposed to take some thousand per annum out of the pockets of the AVairoa people for a harbor at Napier ! Of Avhat use will tho new Napier harbor Avorks bo to us if tho Government Avill give us neither a road or a raihvay to it; or if Mr Blackett and the Napier Press sits on Mr SteAvart's scheme for improA-ing tho entrance to our river, so that avo may send away AA'ith comparative safety and despatch our quota of the frozen beef and mutton which is to be shipped aAvay from. Napier in such large quantities as soon as the new harbor Avorks are constructed ?
