CORRESPONDENCE.

EXPENSES OF CONCERTS

[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph,] Sir, —In justice to the managers of the late concert in aid of St. Joseph's Orphanage, I think it is only right to give them an opportunity of publicly refuting a statement made recently at a large meeting, none of them being present, re expenses of concert: That out of nearly an £80 house only something like £34 was handed over towards the object for Avhich the concert Avas held. If there is any truth in this statement, it is greatly to be regretted that for a charitable object the expenses could not be kept doAvn to something bordering on the reasonable. I for ono cannot believe it, and my object in Avriting this is so that it may be publicly contradicted, as it was publicly asserted to be the case, and if alloAvcd to go unchallenged Avill do future benefits for so worthy an object irreparable injury. I have already heard numbers of people state that thoy would much rather subscribe directly toAvards an institution of the kind than purchase tickets for a concert Avhere something like 80 por cent, of the proceeds arc squandered in expenses. —I am, kc, Onlooker. June 9th, 1883.
