Tko meeting , advertised to take place on Thursday evening last in the Mechanics' Institute building to form a mutual improvement .society or debating claws fell through, only four persons putting , in an appearance. MrLiddle, of the firm ©f Banner and Liddle, of yom , town, is at present on a visit to this district. It is some years now iihicG he was here before, and he expresses himself highly pleased with the progress inado by the district during the last few years. The County Jockey Club held a _ special meeting on Wednesday last, ICth instant, for the the purpose of receiving the statement of accounts for the past season. _ The balance-sheet showed receipts £3GO 5s Sd, leaving- a credit balance of £08 Oh fid. _ The assets amount to £77 19s, and the liabilities are nil. The statement was adopted. It was decided to enquire what action the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club took with re-: gard to the horse The Lnird and the jockey Atkins, and the club will endorse tlto action taken. The secretary was directed to be paid 10 por cent, on £70. A committee consisting of Messrs J. 11. Brown, Gethius, and Moloney was appointed to arrange, with Mr Duff, Tairoa, for the use of the course against next year.

The annual meeting of the Football Club was held the same evening as tho above, when the usual statement of accounts was read and adopted:— Members subscriptions, £5; uniforms, £17 J received for old ball, 10s; balance, 19s 3d; total, £2:5 9s 3d. There is a debit balance of 19s 3d, and the assets amount to £i. The following officers for 1883 were elected:—President, John Hunter Brown Esq.; captain, secretary, and treasurer, Mr E. C. "YV. Porter; committee, Messrs Porter, G. M. Sargisson, and Williams. Subscription ss, Maoris jfialfrpricp. Club to play under Rugby Union rules, It was decided to open the season on Saturday. From Moliaka t learn that a rather serious accident happened on Wednesday to a son of Mr C. T. Cribb, postmaster and telegraphist in that township. The only particulars I can gather is that the boy received some very nasty kicks from a horse necessitating immediate medical attendance. Br. Jackson was sent for, and at once started for Mohalca, but had not returned as I penned these lines,

I suppose it is the Britons' privilege to grumble when they please, and certainly the Britons in this locality have been doing a good deal in that line lately. Bridges gone hero, culverts there, slips in one place and mudholes in another, all afford subjects for growling, and the Comity Council has been made tho butt for many un gentlemanly remarks. Tho weather has been so very bad of late that bridges, earthworks, and culverts have suffered material damage. The Resident Magistrate will hold v sitting of the Court on the 31st instant, when the natives who broke open the pound at Mahia, and rescued from thero sundry horses, will appear on summons. I may remark en passant that Mr E. 33. Bondall, the pound-keeper at Mahia, has resigned his office, but has been asked to hold it over until the result of the forthcoming action is known. I hare heard some talk of a petition which is about to be got up in favor of establishing a branch of the Union Bank in this district. Why this should bo so I know not. I fancy when the Union Bank finds its business has .sufficiently extended a move will be made in this direction. On (lit that a surveyor of note hns lately been over tho suggested line of road between Wairoa and tho Bay of Plenty. I understand that a motion will be brought forward on the subject at the next meeting of tho Count}' Council. A concert is being organised for the Queen's birthday in aid of the Mechanics' Institute funds. While on this .subject I may state that tho Institute is now open to the public ; the room is light and airy, and well supplied with books and periodicals— in fact, I think there is not a town outside of Napier in the Hawkc's Bay province that can boast of such a good collection. Pheasants arc reported to be scarcely so numerous this season a.s last, and few of our local sportsmen have made good bags as yet.
