Auckland, This day. A settler at Mongonui named Hodge avus committed for trial yesterday for rape on a servant girl at the Settlers Hotel but avus admitted, to bail in £200. Christciiucii, This day. At the R.M. Court yesterday Thomas Allen, aged 21 years, Avas sentenced to two months' imprisonment for vagrancy. He hacl been Avell-off a year or two since. AVhen arrested he was so filthy that he had to be " scrubbed cloAvn with a longhandled broom and h ; s clothes burnt. He Avas ruined by gambling and drinking. AA r ELLiNGTON, This day.
Three men avlio Avere mulcted in penalties amounting to £-100 at the R.M. Court some months ago for illicitly distilling spirits at Porirua, and avlio Avere formally taken into custody on Friday oAving to the non-pay-ment of the fines, were lodged iv gaol on Saturday afternoon by order of the Sheriff of the Supremo Court. They Avill remain in gaol until the return of Mr Edward ShaAV, their counsel, from Reefton. It is understood that an application is to bo made in Chambers some day this Aveek for an order compelling the accused or their sureties to pay the fines and costs.
