Harry Jackson, charged with shooting at Mr John Deans a year ago, was yesterday committed for trial.
The damages iv the libel action by the Rev. AY. Cree against Society are laid at .C 1..00. Frederick King was committed for trial yesterday on the charge of setting fire to
his boarding-house on April 23rd, with intent to defraud the Scottish Imperial Insurance Association, in ivhich office his furniture was insured for £100. His wife, Georgina King, was also arrested, but was discharged. Greymouth, This day, Tivcnty-fivc Chinamen Avere brought up yesterday for playing fan-tan. The Court was densely packed with Chinamen and Europeans. The alleged banker Avas acquitted on the ground of insufficient evidence. The keeper of the gambling house was fined £10, with the alternative of ono months' imprisonment. Tavo of their countrymen, cooks, who were apprehended amongst the others, gave sufficient evidence to enable a conviction to be obtained. Tiventv-thrce of the Chinamcnt were fined 10s each and costs, tlie alternative being -IS hours' imprisonment. All their gambling implements were confiscated.
