THE FROZEN MEAT INDUSTRY.— AN IMPORTANT UNDERTAKING.
Auckland, This day. A scheme is on foot for the formation of a company in Auckland to undertake the anticipated export trade in frozen meat. The following letter iv reference thereto from Air J. C. Firth was read at the mooting of the Harbor Board yesterday :—"" Gentlemen.—On behalf of a projected company I have the honor to make an application" to the Harbor Board for a lease of a portion of laud adjoining the railway wharf, as shown on the plan attached hereto, for the purpose of erecting largo freezing works and stores for frozen meat, dairy produce, aud general merchandise. I have further to request on behalf of the proposed company that the Board will provide additional wharf accommodation for largo direct steamers of 5000 tons, by extending an eastern T on the railway wharf, as shown on the plan, attached, and erecting an import shed thereon. Should this application be granted on such terms as would just if y the proposed company iv jiroceetling with the enterprise, arrangements will bo made for drawing the surplus sheep and cattle from both the East and AVest Coasts, and for freezing and storing tho same for shipment, and "for chilling and storing dairy and other products at a depot to be erected on the aforesaid portion of land, and outlined reel in the plan attached hereto. Arrangements are projected for securing direct steam transport between the port of Auckland and London for tho regular and rapid transmission of frozen meat and other produce. I have only to add that if these proposals are carried out a most important step will have been taken towards making tho port of Auckland a groat emporium of trade, by which, it is not too much to say, the interests of the public will ho) greatly^benefited. If convenient to the Board a deputation will attend at any time the Board may appoint iv order more fully to uxjjlaiii the proposals now submitted. " I have, kc, J. C. Fiiu-je." The Chairman said the question was a very big one. He would therefore move that the letter bo referred to the AVorks aud Endowment Committee. Air John Lamb, who seconded the motion, said that tho matter was one of the most important that had ever been before tho Board. Tho motion was carried; Air Firth to be present at the committee meeting, and the engineer to report on the letter.
