It is reported that the Licensing Committee for the district of Tarn dale have signified an intention not to renew tho licenses of the hotels within their jurisdiction. Unless any of the following objections can be sustained against the hotels or their proprietors, we do not think that the Committee have the power to shut up the houses. Clause SO runs as follows:—" ThejLicensing Committee Iv uiy refuse to grant a certificate of renewal of any license if it shall be proved to their satisfaction that such license is liable to be forfeited under any of the provisions of this Act." Clause 81 reads tl ms :—"The objections that may be taken to the renewal of a license may bo one or any of tho following:—" That the applicant is of bad fame and character, or of drunken habits; or, that the premises in question arc not maintained at the required standard, or arc out of repair, or that the rooms are insufficiently furnished for public accommodation, or that the place of convenience is is not kept in a clean and wholesome state ; or that the house is conducted in an improper manner, and drunkenness permitted therein ; or that any of the conditions upon which tiie license was granted have not been satisfactorily fulfilled; or that the licensing thereof is not required in the neighborhood, or that the quiet of the place in which such premises is situate will be disturbed if a license is granted."
