A blunder that was OA-erlooked in the hurry of going to press appeared in our last ldght's issue. It was made to appear that the death rate for the year ISS2 was that for the month of February. The error Avas so palpable that even our contemporary Avas able to see it, and she Avas immediately seized with spasms.

At the public Avorks committee meeting last night a letter Avas read from the trustees of Scinde Lodge complaining of the injustice clone in the unauthorised removal of Mr Price's name from the valuation list. The letter Avas referred to tho municipal solicitor Avith a view to ascertain the position of the Council Avith respect to the grounds of complaint.

For the better prevention of fire three more salt water Avella are required to be sunk in the town. As two of these proposed Avells would be situated, where they are urgently demanded, in the neighborhood of public buildings, such as the railAvay station and Court House, the Corporation is about to apply to the Government for the assistance of prison labor.

Mr O. E. Hugo Avill give the first of a series of lectures on Physiognomy in St. John's schoolroom this evening, commencing at S o'clock. The lecturer has tho reputation of beiug wonderfully clever at character reading, besides possessing the_ gift of imparting a good knowledge of his to an audience in a comprehensive and pleasing form, Adjmssion to this OA-ening's lecture will be free, and we have no doubt Mx Hugo ivill be greeted by v full house.

In another column is published the prospectus of the new company to amalgamate the businesses of Messrs J. Kitchen and Sons, of AVellington, and of Messrs McLeod Bros., Dunedin, in the manufacture of stearine candles, soap, glycerine, &c. _ The tAvo firms are doing an immense business, aud their formation into a company it highly calculated to extend and develop it into one of the most important industries in the colony, Mr Pell is the local broker.

The Compensation. Court gave judgment this morning in the cases of Mr AY. Bogle' a claim for £490, and of Mr H. C. Itobjolm's claim for £1981. Tho Court awarded Mr Bogle £190, with £3110s costs, and £31 10s assessors' fee. Tho Court awarded Mr Robjohns £1400, each side to pay their own costs. Mr Coniford, on behalf of the applicants, asked His Honor whether interest was to be allowed, and was informed that in all .cases interest would be allowed on the gross aAvard

_ man of the name of Edward Downey, in'the employ of Mr P. Scullion, Meanee, was broutrht into town to-day to receive suro-ieal attention at the hospital. By some well devised arrangement of this sort the payment of the accounts might be indefinitely postponed pending their audit.

A telegram from Gisborne informs us that the Simonsen Opera Company opened their season of four nights there yesterdayevening to the largest audience ever gathered in that°toAA-n, some two or three hundred people being unable to gain admittance. Miss Martina Simonsen, as Girofle Girofia created a perfect furore. For the Napier season we remind our readers that the box office is now open at Mr Jacobs', Avhere season tickets can be obtained for £o 3s, and seats reserved. By purchasing a set of season tickets a saving can be effected of 20 per cent.

In reference to the prospectus of the Ross No. 2 Gold Mining Company, published iv another column, the AVest Coast Times says:—"lt is needless to dwell upon the valuable nature of the ground in thelocality of the Ross fiat. A\ r e have no hesitation in saving that the proposed Ross No. 2 Gold Mining Company presents many features which should commend it to the public as a genuine and legitimate mining venture. The ground is exceptionally well situated, and can be worked either by Avater or steam. The right to several beads of water has been secured, and if considered advantageous steam power can also be made available on the spot, without much delay, and at a moderate cost. There is every confidence that the company will be successfully floated." The share list closes on April 3, and persons desirous of im-estiug should make early application to Mr AY. G. Motley, the local broker.
