This day. Nine deserters are reported from H.M.S Diamond.

A meeting of Mr J. Oram Sheppard's creditors was held yesterday, at which the liabilities were stated to be £50,000, and assets £50,000. Of the liabilities £-1 0,000 arc secured by £50,000, the estimated value of the assets. Messrs Stead, Roper, and A. C. Wilson were appointed a committee to investigate the position of the creditors.

At a meeting of the Presbytery yesterday it was stated 'that amicable arrangements had been made with the Rev. L. Fraser to "ive up the church at once and the manse ni six months —ho to be paid his stipend of £120—and in consideration of his services for the church and for education, a subscription will be raised by his former congregation for a testimonial. It is understood that Mr Fraser will continue working in West Milton.

In the District Court yesterday it was proved that in the Railway Department the men received notice each night if they were wanted next day, and when not wanted were "booked oft," and received no pay. The men were compelled by the regulations to hold themselves available if required, so they can take no work on the '' booked oft '' days.
