A.s I hare not sent you any items of intollisrencu lately, perhaps you have been thinking that I had gone on a journey, or prospecting , ; or, like the Crown lands ranger, to the top of the forest reserve to look at a stump burning. Well, the truth is, Mr Editor, I have been on the look out for news, but as a lady friend of mine in Napier used to say it would be iinlueky to send you what I had not got. "We are to have a cheese and bacon factory established very soon. A provisional committee has been appointed, and a section of land as a site has also been decided on. A public meeting will lie held to-morrow evening to confirm the action of the committee. I forward you a prospectus, hoping: A - OU will subscribe largely to the list of shares, about half the capital being taken by the settlers iv and about Woodville.
"The Licensing Committee elected for this district are Messrs Peebles, Fountaiiie, Williamson, Bargh, and Campbell. I hear, however, that owing to some cause one or more electors, whose names appear on the roll, were prevented from voting, whilst a few whose names were not on the roll were put oil by the returning officer and allowed to vote. We may hear more of this matter yet. None of the members of the committee are on the " teetotal ticket."
The hotel for Mr Mackenzie will be commenced this week, and the contractors intend to put on a good number of hands in order to expedite the work, and, as they have agreed to complete it by June, we may be sure no time will be lost.
The Temperance Hotel is not yet finished, although it has been "full" for some weeks, and a baker's shop has been opened in connection therewith.
The School Committee are inviting tenders for enlarging the teacher's residence, and are clearing the play-ground of stumps. I notice also that " drill lessons " iiro being given once a week by a member of tho committee,,-which is a very useful branch of a boy's education. The weather has been capital for sowing seed, and every where feed is plentiful.
