Mr Thomson, the British Secretary at Teheran, has accompanied an exploring party into the grassy plains of the steppes of south-east Russia, and while pursuing their explorations the party were attacked by the natives, but they fortunately managed to escape without receiving any serious injury. The funeral of the late Richard AVagncr, the eminent composer, took place to-day at Bayrcnth, Bavaria. The ceremony was of a most imposing character. Tho Porte has adopted the proposals embodied ill Lord Dufferin's note for a satisfactory settlement of the affairs of Egypt. The Prince of AA r ales has held a grand levee at Cannes, in France, where lie has been staying for some time past. The levee was numerously and brilliantly attended. The Italian Government lias sent a war ship to Tripoli to watch the interests of Italy in that quarter. The new college ivhich has been established at Finsbury for the purpose of imparting technical instruction to tho working classes has been formally opened. A company is being formed iv London for the purpose of advancing moneys on colonial securities. The Russian Government have decided to send a large force to the Caucuses with the view of protecting their territory in that direction. The ambassadors sent by the Queen of Madagascar have finished their work in England, and have now announced their I intention of immediately leaving for America. The House of Commons divided on Friday night on Sir Wilfred Lawson's amendment to the address in reply to the -Queen's speech condemning the conduct of the Govemment in dealing with the affairs, of Egypt. The division resulted iv a large majority in favor of the Government, only thirty-four members voting- for Sir AY. Laivson's amendment. During the course of the debate Mr Balfour expressed regret that decided action had not been taken earlier, Avhieh he thought would have prevented a large amount of unnecessary bloodshed. A majority of the French Senate are in favour of rejecting the bill passed by the Chamber of Deputies providing for the expulsion from France without trial of all members of ex-Royal families of France who shall be adjudged by the Government to be guilty of plotting against the Republic. There is great excitement in Paris over the expected collision between the two Chambers. A portion of the Australian mutton ivhich recently arrived in England has been offered for sale in Birmingham, where it realised the high price of Sd per pound. The Government are expending large sums in providing for the relief of the sufferers by the recent disastrous floods in America. The foot and mouth disease is very preA'alent amongst cattle in various parts of the United Kingdom, and its ravages liaA'e been especially fatal in Inverness and Staffordshire. It has been decided that the annual boat race between the Oxford and Cambridge University crews shall take place on the 15th of March over the usual course. Mr AYyndham has Avritten to Madame Sara Bernhardt protesting against the sale of her jewellery, Avliich he claims as his property.

The Turcomans aro making a formidable demonstration against Russian encroachments in Central Asia. They are now investing the town of Geok Tope, which ivas taken from the Turcomans by General Skobeloff in January, 1881, with a force 7000 strong.
