A LIBEL ON HASTINGS.

[To the Editor or the Daily Telegraph.] Sir,—My attention has been draAyn to a paragraph in your issue of the 22nd instant, Avhich is so Avordcd as to attribute to poor Hastiugs the nuisances which, undoubtedly

exist in Farndon. Your unknoAvn correspondent (whose ingenuity is more to be admired than his veracity) says "the sanitary condition of Hastings is disgraceful, and the aAvful stenches a rising from boilingdown works and slaughtering premises call for immediate action." See lioav beautifully Hastings, AA-hich happens to be a feAv miles from Farndon, is dragged into a report of proceedings "in the Council" relative "to a certain industry on the Farndon road." As a resident in Hastings alloAV me to ask your correspondent to substantiate his statements (if he can) by pointing out (1) in what respect " the sanitary condition of Hastings is disgraceful," and (2) in Avhat part of the town are situated " the boiling-doAvn works and slaughtering premises '' Avhich give rise to '' the aAvf ul stenches" which so exercise his vi\-id imagination. The peculiar Avording of the paragraph in question doubtless escaped you Avhen you inserted it. As, however, it has appeared, I trust that in the interests of truth you will find space for this.letter. As 1 have no reason for concealing my name I subscribe myself.—Yours, Sec,

H. H. Murdoch Hastings, February 24, 1883.
