DELIBERATE MURDER NEAR AWANUI.
ONE NATIVE SHOOTS ANOTHER
From Gisborne we leani that a native chief named Hamaua Mahnika, of Kaitaha, was deliberately shot by another native named Naera Wharti at Whatawhitira, near Awanui, on Tuesday, 13th instant. The injured man died from the effects of the shot two hours afterwards. It is reported that the offender cleared out at once for the King country, armed with a double-bar-relled gun. The murderer is described as being very light in color, of medium _ build, 5 feet 4 inches in height, and about 3o years of age, although looking younger. His hail - , whiskers, and moustache are black; features sharp, with small chin and prominent eyes. There are also on his hands and other portions of his body scars and marks by wliich he can be easily identified. The tragic occurrence is said to have been brought about through Hamanahaving taken Naera's icahbta and given her to Hapuka Tuho for a wife, an action that naturally incensed Naera. The offender also fired at Hapuka, but luckily missed his aim. The police are on the look-out for the murderer, and it is to be hoped they will succeed in capturing him, and in bringing him to justice.
