The Marlborough Times is responsible for the folloAA-iug good story, the incident narrated being said to have occurred not a hundred miles from Blenheim:—A wellkiiOAvn flockoAATicr having a demand made upon him for Avages by a shearer in his employ, handed to him a cheque for the amount on a local bank. He at once procecped to the man of sheep and avool, and demanded an elucidation of the matter. Said the fiockoAvner, Avith avcllfeigiied indignation : " This comes of doing business -witli petty branch banks! They get a feAV hundreds at a time from tlie chief offices, and AA-heii a client comes along with a cheque for a decent amount he skins the bank of all the hard cash, and people coming after Inm are blandly informed that there is not sufficient left to meet their demands. You j>reseiit the cheque in about tlu'ee days, AA'hen they Avill probably have receiA'ecl a remittance from the head office." The man Avent away scratching his head in a thoughtful manner, but returned on the fourth clay Avith his face Avreathed in smiles. " It's all right, sir," he exclaimed, "It is just as you said. The bank must have sent for some more money, for they paid me yesterday Avithout a murmur." Tho flockoAvner's eye tAvinkled and his uioulh expanded like a half-opened carpet bag as he replied, "That's all right; but it's awfully annoying that-wp should sometimes have to Avait Avhile these miserable little banks send away for money."
