HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

This Day.

The Board met at 11 a.m. Present: Eev. D. Sidey (in the chair), Messrs F. Button, M.H.R., Eechab Harding, J. N. Williams, and Captain Russell. CORBISPONDENCE. From the Chairman of the Board (Mr J. D. Ormond) apologising /or his un- ' avoidable absence from the present meeting. From Frazertown Committee, complaining that the master had on several occasions closed the school without leave, and was unpunctual in opening same in the mornings.—A letter was also received from the master apologising for his conduct, and promising to meet the wishes of the Committee in future.—lt was agreed to inform the master that he must obtain the consent of the Committee on any occasion when it might be necessary to close the school. From the same, requesting that Master Percy de Castro be appointed a puoil teacher, his appointment to date from Ist January.—Agreed to. From Giehorne Committee, asking that, in view of the increased capitation allowance from the Government, the bonuses to the teachers at the Gieborne district school might be increased, also recommending that an extra allowance be made to the head master. — The Board agreed that the master's salary was inadequate, and would consider the matter. From Havelock Committee, requesting that certain repairs to the school property there (of which schedule was forwarded) might be carried out. — Consideration deferred until next meeting. From Heretaunga Committee, again urging the Board to assist the Committee in providing a teacher's residence.—Deferred until next meeting. From a number of residents at Meanee desiring a separation of the district into two school districts, one to include the Meanee school, and the other the Taradale school.—After some discussion it waa agreed that the petition be referred to the Taradale Committee asking them to report upon the advisability of dividing the district, and, if approved, to submit without delay the proposed boundaries of the new district. From Napier Committee, stating that professional assistance would have to be obtained in order to procure an estimate of the cost of repairing the roof of the infant school, and suggesting that a competent builder be employed to discover and repair the leaks.—Consideration deferred. From Mr J. Grubb, asking that his eon, to whom a scholarship had been granted, and which had ptill nine months to ruD, might be permitted to attend the Wellington College.—Granted. From Norsewood Committee, Btating that no satisfactory applications for the vacant position of assistant mistress to that school had been obtained, and asking if the Board would allow Miss Beddingfield to be removed there from the Heretauuga school at an advanced salary.— Resolved that the Board cannot agree to the Committee's recommendation. From the same, asking for a number

of repairs and additions to the school property,—Consideration deferred. From Taradale Committee, applying to' ha f ve the school enlarged tcj meet existing retini.rements, —Consideration deferred. From settlers at Wainui, praying the Board to declare Wainui a school district, and suggesting:boundaries —Agreed that the district be gazetted forthwith. From Waipawa Committeee, reporting that an estimate of the cost of erecting a belfry, also a porch to the infant's school, had been obtained, the price being £40. —Approved, the work to be done during tbe.holidays. , FVom WalliDgfora Committee pointirig out the urgent necessity of adding to the teacher's residence, as otherwise the teacher would not remain.—lt was decided that no further payment can be made. From the Education Department, in reply to the Board's letter of August 17th, stating that £515 bad been granted for the purpose of buying the section on the western side of the Napier district school, and for converting it into a recreation ground. From the Education Department, informing the Board that, should nothing hinder the raising of the proposed loan in January, it was probable that the parliamentary grant for school buildings would be distributed in February or early in March. The Hawke's Bay Board's share of the grant would be about £3453.—1t was greed on the motion of Captain Russell, that a letter be sent to the Education Department stating that the grant will be quite insufficient to meet the pressing requirements! of this district, and hoping that the Government will be able to increase the amount, From the same stating that the revieed scholarship regulations forwarded bad been approved by the Minister for Education. From Mr John Renouf, offering his services as clerk of works to the Board. THE BOAHD's AHCHITECT. With respect to the question of appointing an architect to the Board, it was resolved "That a sub-committee consisting of the Chairman and the Rev. D. Sidey be appointed and authorised to arrange with an architect or clerk of works for carrying out any necessary building works that might be undertaken by the Board." NEW MEMBER. The voting of the various School Committees for a member to fill the vacant seat at the Board was as follows :—For Mr White, Kaikora, Ormond, Petane, Blackburn, Tabapau, Danevirke, Napier, Clive, Ormondville, Port Aburiri, Hampden, Waipawa, Matawhero, Gieborne, Hastings, Wcodville, Havelock, Wae-rangi-a-bika, and Wairoa ; for Rev. W. Sbirriffp, Norsewood, Makatokn, Tamuma, Taradale, Patangata, Waipuknrau, Ashley-Clinton, Wallingford, and Takapau ; for Rev. de Berdt Hovell, Porangahau. Mr White was therefore declared to be duly elected. KEPOnTS. Several reports were submitted by the secretary, including a schedule of the bonuses payable to teachers for the halfyear ending December 31bt, 1882, also a schedule of payments to School Committees, amounting to £225 15s 9d in all, for the current quarter. It was agreed that the sewing reports be printed with the other ordinary reports of the Inspector. A number of vouchers having been passed for payment, the Board adjourned.
