The quarterly licensing meeting for the Meanee licensing district will be held tomorrow (Saturday) in the public school at Taradale at noon. Mrs Hampson's meeting in Trinity Wesleyan Church last evening was largely attended, and considerable interest appeared to be manifested in tbe service. The proceedings did not conclude finally until past 10 o'clock. Wβ remind our readers of the entertainment in St. John's schoolroom this evening in the aid of the widow and seven little orphans of the late Peter Schodffler, of Norsewood. The chair will be taken at 7.30 o'clock. We learn from Waipawa that it is intended to give an amateur juvenile Christy Ministrel entertainment in the Oddfellow's Hall at that place on Wednesday evening next in aid of the instrument fund of the Waipawa brass band. The young performers are being drilled by Mr L. D. Bickerton, and should therefore give a good account of themselves. An " Indignant Householder " wants to know what is being done in Coote road. A week ago, he says, the water-channel was cleared out, and a long line of earthwork? thrown up and left there to decrease the width of an already too narrow road. He wants to know whether the work is supposed to be completed, or whether it is left as evidence that the road overseer does not neglect that part of the borough. At a meeting of the Licensing Committee for the Napier Central and South districts, held at the Court House at noon to-day, Mr J. D. Ormond presiding, the following applications were granted: —Transfer, Waldemar Schierning to Samuel A. Snelling, Occidental Hotel; transfer, Kichard Barrows, jun., to Richard Barrows, sen., Caledonian Hotel; transfer, Samuel A. Snelling to Robert Smith, Victoria Hotel. There was no other business. A most amusing letter from Cr. Ellison appears in another column. Or. Ellison is evidently overburdened with an awful sense of duty. And this self-imposed duty seems to be to formulate in a motion or an amendment the first crude idea that comes uppermost, and then to give a sigh of relief when, failing to obtain a seconder, it falls unfruitfully to the ground. Other councillors regard this sort of thing as a waste of time, and resent it accordingly. And yet another " Indignant Ratepayer," who wants the municipal public works committee to wade through the deep layer of sand-dust which has been put on the road between the cemetery and Milton road, and which has rendered that thoroughfare almost impassable. Here is a chance for Cr. Ellison—another "duty" to perform. A considerable amount of excitement is now prevalent amongst our boating friends, caused principally by a public challenge issued by Mr J. Northe, owner and builder of the boat Comet, to sail any boat sailing under the Hawke's Bay Sailing Club's flag. The yacht Besolute has already taken up the gauntlet, and the match will come off in the roadstead on Saturday week. Wβ now learn on reliable authority that the owner of the Wave Queen will also try conclusions on the Saturday following the Besolute's match, so that the Comet can congratulate herself on having her hands full. This evening the Tambour-Major Opera Company will give their last performance in the Theatre Royal, the occasion being a benefit to the prima donna, Miss Elsa May. It would be superfluous on our part to point out the numerous claims that this clever young lady has on the play-going public of Napier for their hearty support on the present occasion, as one and all who have patronised the company during their late season must feel how very deserving Miss May is of some substantial recognition of her worth. But even apart from any consideration of that kind, the attractiveness of the programme itself should secure a bumper house to-night, and enable the artistes who have so successfully catered to the enjoyment of the public for the past fortnight to quit Napier with pleasurable recollections of their stay amongst us. By a reference to the programme published elsewhere it will be seen that, in additional to a grand musical melange, in which all the principals of the company will take part, the third act of " Maritana " and the first of "La Fille de Madame Angot " will be performed. The entire company leave for Wellington per Manapouri to-morrow forenoon. What the sunshine is to tbe unwarmed soil, the dew to the thirsting flower—what a breath of cool air is to the spirit confined to a heated atmosphere, the stars to the night, the oasis to the desert, love to the heart, and religion to the soul, is Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Abomatic Schnapps, as a diuretic, to those affected with urinal troubles, a tonic to the debilitated, an invigorant to the convalescent, and a grateful cordial to weak stomachs, lost appetites, and delicate nerves.—[Advt.]

" Pomade Vaseline " is the purest and best preparation for the hair extant. It promotes growth and luxuriance, and keeps both the head and hair sweet and clean, besides freeing the scalp from scurf and dandriff. Pomade Vaseline contains no animal matter, and will therefore never become rancid, or render the hair a receptacle for decaying substances. In bottles at Is, Is 6d, and 5s each, at Professor Moore's Medical Hall, Waipawa.—[Advt.]
