December 1

Mr Stout has decided to contest the election for the Peninsula vacant seat in the House of Representatives. A three-roomed cottage in North-East Valley, occupied by Daniel Chalmere, was burned down last night. It was insured in the Standard office for £180.

A fatal accident occurred at the Maori Kaik yesterday by which one of the passengers of the steamer Plucky, which had gone there on an excursion trip, was killed. His name was Salmon, manager of a brushware factory in Cumberlandstreet. He formed one of a picnic party who went down in the Plucky. On arrival fix of the party went to a hill about three hundred yards fro-n the landing place, and sat down under the shelter of its bushes. The soil here is very crumbly. Two horses above were grazing, and it is supposed tbat one shifted a boulder, which came tumbling down. A lady seated with Salmond called his attention to the danger, but she had scarcely uttered the words wheu the stone struck him on the bead with such force rs to impel him fully fifteen feet down the hill. He expired five minutes afterwards. He was 23 years old, and was unmarried. Another seriouß bush fire is reported, this time at the head of Hawea lake, where it is feared the whole of a valuable forest will be destroyed.
