CHRISTCHURCH.

November 7.

Two attempts at burglary were apparently made in Christchurch on Sunday night. The door of one shop had been forced open, and the lock of another tampered with, but there is no property missing.

The rain on Friday and Saturday did immense good to the crops aDd paßtures, but caused a few losses among shorn sheep and lambs.

Several fine takes of trout were secured in the Selwyn river during last week by Mr P. Stoddart, President of the Anglers' Society, Dunedin. On Monday last two of 2Jlb and one of Gib were taken ; on Tuesday, within ten minutes, four were hooked, two breaking the tackle, and before 3 p.m. eleven were landed, of from 31b to 6Jlb, totalling in all 421b; on Wednesday in a few hours eight were taken, weighing as much as could be carried. Mr Mark Stoddart, who accompanied his nephew, writes that he has never seen in any part of the world such fine fish both as respects shape, condition, color, and eating. The Waimate has brought out twentyfive ferrets for the Government, and a number of canaries and linnets. A good many of the birds died on the voyage.
