AUCKLAND.
October 28. A vein of graphite has been struck at Coromandel. The Observer newspaper recently published affidavies filed in the Supreme Court concerning pending cases, and Judge Gillies yesterday stated tbit this was a very • gross attempt to pervert justice, and recommended the matter to the consideration of the Law Society. The Native Minister, the Hon. J. Bryce, accompanied by MrO. Wilkinson, native agent; Mr W. K. Butler, private secretary ; Mr J. Brown, native interpreter, and several Maori chiefs, left by train yesterday for Alexandra, and arrived there at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The party were met by Colonel Lyon and Captain Gascoigne. It was arranged to have the formal introduction meeting with Tawhiao at Captain Gascoigne's quarters. Forty-three natives, headed by Tawhiao, met Mr Bryce. Among the principal chiefs present wereTeNgakau, Honi Tetare, To Pikia, Hone Te One, Te Raiki, Honana, and Haupokiha. Tawhiao invited Mr Bryce to meet the assembled natives at Whatiwhatiboe in the morning, so that his people might see him. Mr Bryce accepted the invitation, and asked Tawhiao to come over in the morning and they could drive back together over the bridge and thus formally ©pen it. Tawhiao replied that it would be better for him to stay at his place to receive the Native Minister as his guest. Mr Bryce replied that he could please himself as to that, but he (Mr Bryce) would go to Whatiwhatihoe bridge in the morning. Two natives presented Mr Bryce with handsome mats adorned with kiwi feathers as tokens of good-will. Mr Bryce and Tawhiao then shook hands and the meeting dispersed. Mr Moss, M.H.R., was also present at the interview. The inquest on the body of a man unknown, found in the harbor, resulted in an open verdict of found downed. He is believed to be a foreign seaman.
