HASTINGS ATHENÆUM.
The adjourned meeting of persons interested in the above was held on Friday night in the district school, about twenty persons being present. Mr J. N. Williams was voted to the chair. Captain Russell, in reporting the progress which the committee had made, stated that about one hundred and sixty annual subscribers had been secured, and that about £65 had been promised as subscriptions towards tbe building fund of the hall, which might be used by the custodian free of charge in return for the care he would bestow in looking after and keeping the room and books, &c, in order. There was also a sum of about £80 which had been voted to a disabled jockey fund, but which had not been accepted by the H.B. Jockey Club on account of many difficulties being in the way. A part of tbis he thought might be obtained for the purpose of augmenting the building fund, if properly looked after. With the direct object of starting the affair he would move that Messrs Wellwood, Hayes, Johnson, Doney, Reynolds, Ramsay, Ireland, Collinge, J. N. Williams, Rainbow, Dr. Faulknor, and the mover, be appointed a committee to prepare plans and canvas the district for subscriptions for a suitable building for the purpose of an Athenaeum, and to draw up a set of rules for the conduct of the same, to be submitted at a meeting to be held ia three weeks time. The motion was seconded by Mr Wellwood and carried. Proposed by Mr McLeod, and seconded by Captain Russell that Mr Johnson he appointed hon. sec. and treasurer. Carried. Captain Russell stated that Mr Boyle had agreed to convey to the trustees, free of all restrictions, the section known as the Athenaum reserve. He would therefore move that the secretary be instructed to write to Mr Boyle thanking him for tbe generous offer of this valuable site, and request that, when the AtheDseum is an established fact, he will allow himself to be elected a life member. Seconded by Mr Collinge and carried. Mr Wellwood moved that the following gentlemen be nominated as trustees, whose names shall be submitted to Mr Boyle for approval:—Captain Russell, Messrs J. N. Williams, Boyle, Reynolds, and the mover. Mr Johnson seconded the resolution which was carried. The usual vote of thanks to the chairman closed the proceedings.
